Whiting has it going on this summer, with activities galore from which you can pick your pleasure. Concerts, sports, food, shopping, festivals and celebrations – they’re all here.
Music will fill the air at family-friendly concerts most Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m. between June and August at the Sheridan Concert Plaza. Bring your chair, cooler and snacks, or stop at a restaurant along 119th Street for some carryout to enjoy.
The plaza will also be the site of live music during Alfresco Nights from 5 to 10 p.m. on June 15, Aug. 24 and Sept. 14. During these events 119th Street will be blocked off so that adventuresome diners can sample small plates and drink specials at outside tables.
Every third Wednesday through October is Cruise Night. In addition to seeing classic cars, you’ll have the chance to eat and shop at a vendor pop-up market downtown, listen to music and more.
Summer With the Symphony offers four free performances at Whiting Lakefront Park between July 20 and Sept. 1. This is another occasion when you can bring your dinner to enjoy along with the show.
On July 3 the fireworks show, also at Whiting Lakefront Park, will light up the sky over Lake Michigan at 10 p.m. The Independence Day celebration will continue the next day with the July 4 Parade at 10 a.m.
Another not-to-miss celebration is the annual Pierogi Fest, an opportunity for everyone to get back to their roots as they enjoy food, music, the wacky Polka Parade and a concert by Sugar Ray from July 26-28.
Summertime Saturdays mean that the Whiting Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants and lots more. The season also means heading out to Oil City Stadium as the Northwest Indiana Oilmen take to the field for games now through August.
To cool off and chill out between all this activity and entertainment, Whihala Beach at Whiting Lakefront Park is the place to be. Sun, splash and try your skills at the WhoaZone obstacle course right out on the water to enjoy summer as it was meant to be.
