White County has a rich history of transportation connected to the railroads. Many communities were founded along the railway lines. The gem of these railroad cities and towns is Monon, located in northern White County.
The Monon Line (also called the “Hoosier Line”) and the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad operated from 1857 to 1956 almost entirely in the State of Indiana. You don’t have to be a railroad enthusiast to enjoy this rich Hoosier history.
The Monon Connection, located north of Monon is said to the be the largest detailed train museum in the world…the world!!! A tour of the museum will enrich your minds and delight your curiosity. Did you know that each train line had their own dining car with a china pattern specifically created for their unique brand? Often, the regions the railways served provided the inspiration for the designs. The Monon Connection boasts extremely rare china patterns and pieces…some reportedly not even found in the Smithsonian! For example, they have two of three remaining demitasse cups of one rare railway pattern.
This is a perfect family destination with the Whistle Stop Café on site. Families love to watch the trains circle above as they dine.
If trails are your passion, enjoy White County’s Barn Quilt Trail of the Hoosier Hearland. Currently, there are 11 Barn Quilts in White County. Barn Quilt Tours celebrate the rich history of agriculture and the time-honored tradition of quilting. They connect communities. The first barn quilt in White County was unveiled in 2013.
Each White County community has charming parks with opportunities for walking/hiking. A favorite destination is Altherr Nature Park, located on South Main Street in Monticello. The Nature Park consists of 18.2 acres of land donated by William “Bill” L. Altherr. This community park showcases natural grasses and a multi-use trail winding in a beautiful nature preserve. The paths are maintained perfectly. There is even an amphitheater with a fire pit. This lovely venue has been used as the backdrop for weddings and family portraits.
