When autumn arrives and temperatures drop, thoughts in Cass County turn to celebrating the upcoming holidays. From Halloween all the way through December, they’ve got your family covered with a variety of fun events to get you into the spirit.
The spooky season begins with a Halloween Cookie Decorating Class at Black Dog Coffee at 3 p.m. on Oct. 12. Follow that on Oct. 18, 19 and 20 with doubler-feature performances by the Civic Players of Logansport. “Plan 9” is a theatrical adaptation of Ed Wood’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” and “Night of the Living Dead” features hilarious zombies.
Starting on Oct. 21 will be a Facebook competition where businesses and organizations make scarecrows that will appear all around downtown. The “Spooktacular” trick-or-treat event on Oct. 24 will be followed immediately by the Elks Halloween Parade. An added plus this year is that the new DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) program enables visitors to sip their libations as they stroll among participating establishments around downtown.
The Logansport Parks and Recreation Department invites you to “Howl at the Moon” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 25 in Huston Park. The free event includes a campfire with popcorn, marshmallows, apple cider and space-themed goody bags along with a glow-in-the-dark hayride.
Also on the 25th, take part in the Downtown Pub Crawl. At this event you will pick up a card and have it stamped in at least five participating stores. Take your card to the State Theatre after 10 p.m. for a chance to win a limited-edition event T-shirt. At 10:30 local band Basement238 will perform a concert followed by a screening of “Nightmare on Elm Street” — all for free.
Wind up the season at the Fiberglass Freaks Batman replicas museum, just open on Oct. 31. Here you’ll find two floors of Batman sets, props, statues and memorabilia from the comic books, TV show and movies. If you’re a fan, grab your bat brethren and head there for a new and unusual way to celebrate the creepiest night of the year.
In November the area switches gears to get ready for the December holidays. The Department of Parks and Recreation sponsors the glittering Christmas in the Park at Spencer Park, which opens on the 27th and runs through the season.
The “Light up Logansport” parade will be on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m., with every float aglow in colorful lights. The Elks Christmas parade will follow, and to further brighten this part of Indiana, there will be a decorating contest for local businesses as well as a similar competition for residences all over Cass County.
The Logansport Parks and Recreation Department will host breakfast with Santa on Dec. 7 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the McHale Complex at Riverside Park. The price of admission ($8 for adults and $6 for children) includes a breakfast provided by McDonald’s, a photo with Santa, crafts, games and more. Be sure to register in advance to save your place since they won’t be selling tickets at the door.
The Logansport Junior Civic Theater will perform “Christmas in the Land of Oz” on Dec. 14 at 2 and 7 p.m. In this takeoff from the classic L. Frank Baum tale, the Wicked Witch becomes a grinch and steals Christmas. For more information visit: www.visit-casscounty.com.
