“An Old-Fashioned Christmas at the Canal”
Delphi’s historic Wabash & Erie Canal Park will once again transform into a winter wonderland for this year’s Christmas at the Canal festival. Set to take place on December 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., this annual event invites visitors of all ages to step back in time and experience a traditional holiday celebration in one of Indiana’s most picturesque and historic settings.
Families are invited to bring their little ones to meet Santa Claus in a charming log cabin, nestled along the canal. Visitors will have the opportunity to snap photos with St. Nick, share their Christmas wishes, and enjoy the festive holiday ambiance. Santa’s log cabin offers the perfect setting to capture a memorable holiday moment.
No holiday celebration would be complete without a bit of festive shopping, and you can take care of your gift shopping at the canal as well. Local artisans and vendors will be setting up shop, offering a variety of handmade goods perfect for gift-giving. Whether you’re looking for a thoughtful stocking stuffer or a one-of-a-kind present, you’ll find it as you support local crafters.
In keeping with the park’s dedication to preserving the region’s heritage, Christmas at the Canal will offer a unique opportunity to learn about historic trades and crafts. Skilled artisans will be on hand to demonstrate traditional 19th century techniques such as woodworking, weaving, broom-making, coopering, and more. These interactive demonstrations give visitors a chance to witness the craftsmanship that was essential to life along the Wabash & Erie Canal in its heyday.
A highlight of the event is the opportunity to tour the beautifully restored Reed Case House, one of Delphi’s most significant historic landmarks. This stately home, built in 1844, offers a glimpse into life during the canal era, showcasing period furnishings, artifacts, and holiday decorations that reflect the tastes of the 19th century. Knowledgeable guides will share the story of the house’s history and tales of Case family Christmases past.
The Wabash & Erie Canal Museum will offer free entry to all visitors during Christmas at the Canal. The museum is an interactive experience that brings to life the story of America’s longest canal. From hands-on exhibits about the construction of the canal to displays about daily life in the 1800s, the Canal Museum is a must-see for history enthusiasts and curious visitors of all ages.
As a gift to the community, admission and all activities are free of charge for Christmas at the Canal. Thanks to event sponsors Duke Energy and Mustangs to Fear, you can partake in the holiday cheer without breaking the bank.
Whether you’re in the mood for a festive family outing or a peaceful winter walk through a historic park, Christmas at the Canal offers something for everyone. Come enjoy the festive atmosphere that makes this event a beloved holiday tradition for locals and visitors alike.
