Summer in the rearview mirror, kids heading back to school and the leaves beginning to turn can mean only one thing: It’s time for free fall merrymaking in the Heart of Amish Country, Indiana. Shipshewana and Middlebury are a pleasure to visit at any time of year, but between Sept. 1 and Oct. 28 there’s an extra helping of fun, food and activities they have to offer.
Explore 24 festivals and events including the Snip-Chic Fall Craft and Vintage Show, the Shipshewana Fall Crafters Fair and the Middlebury Hometown Harvest. Automotive enthusiasts will enjoy two classic car shows, and for entertainment “When Calls the Heart” will be playing at the Blue Gate Music Hall or you can watch a movie Friday night in the park. You won’t want to miss the Middlebury Pumpkin Race.
If shopping is what you seek, head to the Shipshewana Swap Meet and the Labor Day Flea Market. An Autumn Shopping Pass provides special deals and discounts at local shops along with free goodies such as popcorn and pretzels.
Colorful fall-themed décor all over town includes the 29 Straw Bale Art designs, 42 giant bales crafted into whimsical art like the four-bale cow at The Barn Door and others such as an alligator, sunflowers and more. And be sure to come hungry. You’ll want to sample some of the tidbits that taste especially good at this time of year — apple pie, pumpkin spice lattes, butterscotch cookies, cinnamon doughnuts and much more.
With a full two months in which to discover everything there is to see, you can come multiple times and stay as long as you like. Need a guide to show you around? That can be arranged, too. Check out VisitShipshewana.org and follow @VisitShipshewana on Facebook and Instagram for updates. While you’re online, book your hotel room early. The event is popular, and a whole lot of other people will be there to take part in the festivities, too.
