Oh, no, summer is gone: whatever shall we do?! -faints- Fear not: to escape the seasonal doldrums, you just autumn fall-ow your heart to Pulaski County. ‘Ber’ months? More like ber-y awesome months!
The river-recreation season is drawing to an end, but there’s still time to enjoy a last float or two, plus the Chamber of Commerce is hosting the inaugural River Fest at the Winamac Town Park on 1 October: music, food, a chili cook-off, and an electric parade through a park that would make Leslie Knope proud.
The city has pigeons. The desert has roadrunners (Meep-meep!). Here, we’re almost synonymous with sandhill cranes this time of year. The Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area is such a popular destination for these migrating birds that they do an official bird count throughout the season (mid-October through mid-December), and a local fire department hosts the annual Medaryville Crane Cruise bicycle ride. It’s on 8 October, and you get to enjoy some incredibly idyllic rural landscapes, combines, and cranes as you burn those calories and breathe in our fresh air.
What’s the best part of this time of year? Spooky season, of course! With the last Saturday of October returns the Halloween Campsite Walking Tour at the majestic state park: crafts and games, a costume contest, and the walking tour — which probably involves treats if you threaten enough tricks.
