Crawfordsville thrives itself on the strong cultural heritage routed in their early beginnings. Montgomery County has seven museums that offer unique features that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. For instance, the Rotary Jail Museum features a jail cellblock that rotates 360 degrees. The Carnegie Museum, housed in Indiana’s first Carnegie Library building, features six galleries with different themes and rotating exhibits. Located on 3.5 acres of wooded grounds, the General Lew Wallace Museum houses personal artifacts from Renaissance man, Lew Wallace’s service in various countries.
“The Athens of Indiana” is what Crawfordsville is known as. Montgomery County is the area of a thriving creative community with artist’s creations, studios, galleries, and workshops. Crawfordsville also hosts the Vanity Theatre, a community showcase for live performances. The Athens of Indiana Arts Gallery contains an art facility showcasing quality exhibits for the public as well as an open studio environment. Other intriguing art galleries in the area include Green Street Gallery, creativeLAB, Mary Bishop Memorial Art Gallery, and Needles & Knots Fiber Arts Studio.
Montgomery County has many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors! Clements Canoes in Waveland offers canoeing, kayaking, tubing, camping, and cabins on scenic Sugar Creek, allowing you to explore covered bridges, state parks, and great fishing! For the adventurous, Indiana Zipline Tours offers a 2-hour adventure high in the trees. Tour Groups are available for up to 12 guests. Other fun outdoor activities include visiting Shades State Park & Pine Hills Nature Preserve and Lake Waveland, a perfect afternoon for swimming, boating, and fishing!
